The 2022 Ford Bronco features a nostalgic design that combines both civil on-road driving style and excellent off-road capability. The sheer bandwidth of its capabilities is what makes the Ford SUV so popular. The Bronco is equally configurable in convertible top two- and four-door body styles and removable car door.
Durable materials and simple design recall inside The original old-fashioned Bronco, but the interior aesthetic looks cheap on the upper trim levels. All Mustangs have all-wheel drive and a turbo-four or twin-turbo V-6. Neither is terribly fuel efficient nor sound particularly pleasant, but they’re quick and responsive.
The Ford Bronco is a capable off-roader with minimal sacrifice in on-road drivability. Cons include fuel economy, wind noise braking distance and some cheap-looking interior materials. Otherwise, the Bronco is a pleasure to drive and easy to work with. Ford Bronco Performance
Whether you stick with the turbocharged four-cylinder or opt for the turbocharged V6, the Bronco has plenty of smooth power paired with a quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission for everyday driving. The extra power from the V6 makes uphills and short merges easier and more fun, the V6 Bronco hits 60 mph Taking into account the big tires and four-door configuration, the average display time is 7.3 seconds.
The Bronco is not equipped with eight cylinders. In its place is a standard 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder or an optional 330-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6. Both gas engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, but the 7-speed manual is only compatible with the smaller gearbox. Unfortunately, neither engine has an enthusiastic soundtrack.
Each Bronco sends power to all four wheels, and its independent front suspension is more sophisticated than the Jeep’s front rod axle. Like other off-roaders in and out of the Bronco, but proper steps up and down may be required, but numerous handlebars have been placed throughout the cabin to assist. We prefer to put the front handles on the windshield pillar rather than the dash, but they will pinch.
The wide adjustment range of the driver’s seat and steering wheel will ensure that all controls and gauges are within easy reach. We appreciate the large, chunky physical controls—they’re sized and positioned to make them easy to see and use when you’re wearing gloves.
Plenty of headroom makes the interior of the Bronco feel large. Even in the two-door model, that feeling continues in the rear seats, but getting into these seats in the two-door Bronco can feel difficult because the front seats don’t slide forward far enough.
Ford Bronco Technology
Standard and available driver aids are often mixed, including adaptive cruise control and exterior cameras. On top of that, the Bronco comes with a suite of useful off-road driving aids that can be controlled individually or by an experienced driver.
Vehicles go through different driving modes for novices. Unfortunately, we found, some systems including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist were poorly tuned.
Otherwise, the Bronco will benefit from the latest Ford infotainment and connectivity software. The central display has crisp graphics and easily integrates with Android and Apple smartphones, whether you want to use wired or wireless. The stereo in our test vehicle couldn’t cover the road Noise on the highway.
Ford Bronco Infotainment and Connectivity
Ford’s latest built-in Sync 4 software powers an 8.0- or 12.0-inch touchscreen embedded in the middle of the Bronco’s dash. The setup allows for over-the-air updates, and it connects wirelessly to the cloud and to the user’s smartphone.
The infotainment system also supports many Modern infotainment features, including Apple CarPlay Android Auto and subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. The unit can also be upgraded with desirable options such as built-in navigation and a more powerful B&O stereo.
Ford Bronco Storage
Compared to the Wrangler, the Bronco’s larger size means more interior space and more cargo capacity. But the four-door Mustang has less room than a similarly sized Toyota 4Runner. The Bronco’s rear swing door opens to the passenger side and is held in place by a strut.
On hardtop models, the rear glass folds up easily, but the soft top doesn’t open that far and requires a support bar to hold it up.
A decent number of cup holders and interior storage options for nooks and crannies for personal items will suffice. The net on the door pocket is too shallow for most water bottles. Some models of the front seat backs have Style attachment points for suspension equipment.
An optional trailer hitch that includes four-pin and seven-pin connectors enables the Bronco to tow up to 3500 pounds. A trailer brake controller is not included, but is available as an accessory. All Mustangs can be towed flat (all four wheels are on the ground).
Ford Bronco Fuel Economy
Because it’s a new vehicle with a 10-speed automatic transmission, we expected better fuel economy from the Bronco. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the four-cylinder Mustang is 17 to 20 MPG. Likewise, the six-cylinder version gets 17 MPG to 19 MPG combined. Generally speaking, these figures are lower than comparable Jeep Wrangler models.
Our test car was the four-door First Edition Bronco with the 2.7-liter V6, with an EPA-estimated 17 MPG. We were able to match that estimate in mixed driving, but it’s lower than any Wrangler you can buy, buy, save for Jeep’s V8-powered 392.
Ford Bronco Value
Some may be disappointed by some cheap-looking interior materials in the same Bronco, especially in high-end models, but others may see the benefit of long-term durability when the interior is exposed to the elements.
Bronco offers off-road hardware more broadly through its pricing Spectrum provides greater access to shoppers at different price points than the Jeep Wrangler. It should be noted that our test vehicle was a first-edition Bronco that cost over $60,000. The base two-door Bronco starts at just over $32,000, but upgrading to upper trim can quickly get expensive. Our ideal configuration is a four-door a more powerful engine, and it needs to have off-road hardware to live up to its roots.
