The all-new 2022 Hyundai Elantra has been completely redesigned and it looks great! This compact sedan is available in four different trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited, and N Line. All four trims come standard with a 147-horsepower 2.0 litter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.
The SE trim is the most affordable option and it comes with a decent amount of standard features including LED headlights, heated front seats, and Elantra competes with heavyweights like 2022 Kia EV6, The Hyundai Kona and Lexus UX 2023, and their style and value-oriented packages make them solid choices among compact cars.
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is a small sedan that was just redesigned last year. Sleek and modern styling stands out in its class and even at an affordable price it comes with an impressive list of standard features. A rather poor base engine and too much hard plastic inside, sedan It doesn’t claim to be Edmunds’ top-of-the-line small sedan, but it’s still a competitive option for rivals like the Honda Civic Kia Forte and Mazda 3.
2022 Hyundai Elantra Review
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra stands out in traffic thanks to its distinctive styling, but beneath the noticeably creased sheet metal is a spacious and practical compact. Its cabin has a similarly futuristic design and offers some high-end features, especially on high-end trims, to help the wow factor.
The entry-level engine is a somewhat lethargic 147-horsepower four-cylinder mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT), but a hybrid powertrain and a 201-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder are both optional.
After a complete design for the 2021 model year, the Elantra remains unchanged for 2022. A snappy Elantra N model is slated for this year, but we’ll review that model separately.
2022 Hyundai Elantra Engine
The standard non-hybrid system is a 147-horsepower four-cylinder with front-wheel drive and a CVT. The hybrid model uses a 1.6 litter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor that produces 139 horsepower. Shifting in the hybrid is handled by a six-speed automatic transmission.
None of these options offer Acceleration is exciting, but in our test drive of the non-hybrid model, we noticed good ride quality and enough power for normal city and highway driving. The most exciting Elantra is the performance-oriented Elantra N which we reviewed separately, but for those who can’t quite stand that car’s price tag Consider the tamed N Line model.
It’s powered by a turbocharged 1.6 litter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. After a short test drive, we were impressed by the N Line’s stronger acceleration and its adept handling Athletics without compromising overly stiff rides.
2022 Hyundai Elantra Performance
In terms of speed, the base 2.4 litter track, four-cylinder is lacking. On the Edmunds test track, our Elantra hit 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, which is slower than average compared to the competition. It’s not terrible, but passing or reaching highway speeds can be laborious.
The power it has is sent through a continuously variable automatic transmission tuned by Hyundai for optimal fuel economy, so it’s not terribly impressive for energetic driving either. But in typical cases, the transmission provides a smooth experience and only a little cut are known for their notorious buzz.
Elsewhere, the Elantra is fairly intermediate. For a predictably small sedan it handles corners well and it’s less prone to jitters from bumps. But for sporty driving, driving, you’ll want the N Line with sports suspension.

To match its striking exterior, the Elantra’s cabin looks very futuristic. The dashboard and centre console wrap around the driver, while the passenger side takes a more minimalist approach. The Elantra offers a smooth ride. There’s enough plush to soak up bumps in the road well, but it also settles down relatively quickly. For the most part, the seats are also comfortable. The bottom of the driver’s seat just feels flat to the touch and may not provide enough support on road trips more than a few hours. There’s also not much side support to keep you stable when cornering.
The climate control is easy to work using the large dial with the dual-zone climate control available. Equipped with rear heated seats for quick start. 2022 Hyundai Elantra Fuel Economy and MPG
The EPA estimates the 2022 Elantra with the 2.0, but four-cylinder engine will get up to 33MPG MPG in the city and 43, but on the highway. Models with the turbocharged 1.6 litter MPG four-cylinder are estimated to get up to 28 MPG city and 36 MPG highway.
The most frugal hybrid Elantra is rated at 53 MPG city and 56 highways MPG. We also found the pricing attractive, especially considering A long list of features that come standard with every model. Our only complaints are: the amount of hard plastics in the cabin and the rear seat with hardly any design.
2022 Hyundai Elantra Prices
Midrange SEL models offer the best balance of price and features. We’d opt for the available SEL Convenience Package, which adds a 10.3-inch digital gauge display adaptive cruise control a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob a wireless smartphone charging pad and heated front seats.
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra will be one of the most important vehicles in the Korean carmaker’s line-up. That’s because it will be the first all-new model since the nameplate was introduced in 1990. The previous-generation model was last redesigned for the 2017 model year, so this new one is long overdue.
