2023 audi sq5 review

The Q5 is a competent luxury SUV but lacks any of the standout features that make it a must-buy. While Audi’s bestsellers are spacious refined and surprisingly nimble the small luxury SUV class is filled with competitors that offer the same quality but with great performance and all-round excitement.

Scored for you by the best testing teams in America.

Performance

Q5How to drive? We tested the Q5 at 45 TFSI which means it has a 261-horsepower engine. While the Q5 put up competitive numbers on our test track sprinting to 60 mph in under 6 seconds it was make-or-break in the real world.

Once the turbo revs up you’re right The gears have a nice smooth pull to the redline worthy of an Audi badge. But transfers can be slow and sometimes indecisive. It’s an adequate powertrain, but it’s not as responsive. Braking is the opposite – the pedals are firm and there’s a lot As long as you ask for stopping power.

Push the Q5 to the limit on winding roads, and you’ll get good grip and impressive balance. While the Q5’s Quarto’s all-wheel-drive system with Ultra technology defaults to front-wheel drive under normal conditions we noticed that it drive enthusiastically.

It helps give this luxury SUV some beneficial athleticism.

Audi sq5 2023 Comfort

How comfortable is the Q5? Our Q5 Prestige front sports seats are very comfortable heating and ventilation. The cushions are a bit too firm to be called plush but provide welcome support on long drives.

The cabin feels good completely cut off from the outside world. In particular there is almost no detectable wind noise even on the highway.

Ride comfort is satisfactory for this class given the Q5’s excellent handling and our test car’s 20-inch wheels. You coast over most surfaces and major road imperfections filter out harsh feedback with refined tautness.

Audi sq5 Interior

How is the interior? Whether you’re sitting in the front or back the Q5’s cabin is spacious with sleek door openings for easy entry and exit.

We also like the commanding driving position that provides excellent outside visibility. A disadvantage is that The handrail installed on the door feels too far away to provide the intended support.

The standard 10.1-inch touchscreen looks great, but it’s mounted on top of the dash like a stationary tablet. There are also no dials or touchpad controls, so you’ll need to poke and swipe which requires a bit more reach as you place the seat further back.

Some of our employees are Nostalgic for the console-mounted control knobs on the previous-generation Q5 which were easy to reach.

Audi sq5 Technology

How is the technology? Technology is the Q5’s strong suit. The central touchscreen has a high-res display and feels responsive although as mentioned you might not like the reach you need to get to the screen.

The digital instrument panel is equally clear and responsive—seamlessly Paired with the center screen. Advanced driver assistance systems also perform well.

The adaptive cruise control is well calibrated on the highway, and you’re unlikely to miss the flashing blind-spot warning lights.

While Apple CarPlay smartphone integration with wireless connectivity is standard we found wired USB connectivity to be more consistent.

Bluetooth’s compatibility is great, and our vehicle includes a wireless charging station. Don’t expect too much from a voice-activated system because if You are required to follow strict prompts.

Storage of Audi sq5

How is the storage? The Q5 has 25.8 cubic feet of maximum storage behind the seats which is nearly average for its class. Other luxury SUVs in this class including the BMW X3 (28.7 cubic meters) and the Acura RDX (31.1 cubic meters) do offer more cargo space.

There are several binding points Inside but no underground storage. Small-item storage in the cabin is equally competitive but unobtrusive. There’s a mid-sized center console box under the armrest and a handy square socket in front of the gear lever to keep the phone at an easy-to-view angle.

The Q5 has a maximum towing capacity of 4400 pounds which is strong for this class.

Only a handful of competitors can match it. For parents well-placed car seat anchor and tether points and a roomy rear seat make life easier.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The Audi Q5 45 TFSI gets an EPA-estimated 25 MPG in combined driving (23 city/28 highway) a decent number for this class.

We backed this up by getting 27.9 MPG in real-world driving on a 115-mile standardized evaluation route.

Audi sq5 Value

Is the Q5 cost-effective? Build quality is a hallmark of Audi cars and the Q5 stays true to the brand. Interior panels show a tight fit throughout the cabin with an interesting mix of genuine metallic leather and wood on the inside.

Some competitors are better at wowing you Crystal or flashy styling but the Q5 brings a lot.

We’re still conflicted about its pricing. The Q5 doesn’t differ much from the packaging, so you’re paying a high price and not getting a great product in return.

Audi’s only four-year/50,000-mile base and powertrain warranty doesn’t help it case.

Wildcard

The Q5’s conservative styling is in keeping with the model’s past, but it also sets a mediocre tone that the driving experience can’t overcome.

Audi sat their best feel like they’re at the forefront of luxury technology and performance. This Q5 is not that kind of Audi. It’s a safety game looking for a standout edge.

Which Q5 recommend?

As of this writing Audi has not released official information about the 2023 model year. We’ll update our recommendations if anything changes but based on last year’s Q5 we’re still recommending the Premium Plus trim level. It includes more details for comfort and convenience as well as panoramic views Glass sunroof and additional driver assistance systems.

It also serves as a gateway to more options, so you can better tailor your SUV to your liking.
