Compact SUVs are everywhere and luckily all of our automakers have responded by making these models more capable and fun to drive. Many vehicles in this segment offer more cargo space than sedans, and one even has a 302-horsepower powertrain!

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 impresses with its luxurious feel and affordable price. While the CX-5 is actually a pleasure to drive, this Mazda offers more than just a comfortable and well-appointed ride.

Buyers can choose between a 187-hp 2.5-liter I-4 or a 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4 both available with Six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard across the line.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the biggest products in the segment. In fact, it’s big enough to squeeze into a small third-row seat on some models. A 184-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission come as standard, as is front-wheel drive.

The powertrain feels a bit while, especially when the SUV comes with the optional all-wheel-drive system, it’s surpassed by the Tiguan’s quality. Like most of Volkswagen’s Toto, Tiguan’s interior is ergonomic but lacks any real sense of style.

Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson benefits from a complete overhaul for the 2022 model year. In addition to its bold new look, the model has added gas-electric hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. The smaller gasoline model relies on a crude 187-horsepower 2.5-liter I-4 for power.

It’s matched to an eight-speed, An automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. However, all-wheel drive is optional. Meanwhile, the hybrid unit makes 221 horses while the plug-in unit makes 261 horses and offers up to 33 miles of electric-only driving, according to the EPA. Both come standard with all-wheel drive.

Honda CR-V

Honda’s CR-V isn’t the sportiest or best-looking compact SUV, but it’s a well-rounded model. Every gas-only CR-V comes with a 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and one of the best CVT son in the market. The 181-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder is Standard and larger 250-horsepower four-cylinder engines are available; both come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

An 8.0-inch touchscreen with Ford Sync 3 infotainment system is onboard, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. As before, the strictly gasoline-powered RAV4 comes with a 203-horsepower four-cylinder paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. RAV4 Hybrid models have standard all-wheel drive and rely on a gasoline-electric hybrid system produces a peak of 219 horsepower.

The RAV4 Prime is the most powerful variant. It’s a 302-horsepower plug-in hybrid model. Our only major complaint about this well-rounded compact SUV centers on it’s relatively loud four-cylinder engine. We thought the noise coming into the cabin was too much.

Nissan Rogue

Mitsubishi Outlander

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a product of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Considering the last Outlander was last on this list, the merger proved to be a big plus for the three-diamond logo. This new-generation Outlander shares its chassis with the Nissan Rogue.

One of A 181-hp four-cylinder and CVT is the only way to split it (the Outlander PHEV also offers a 221-hp plug-in hybrid which is still based on the previous-generation compact SUV) and front-wheel drive is standard.

All-wheel drive is optional. On our highway fuel economy of 75 mph Testing, the top Outlander SEL came in at just 26 MPG compared to the Rogue’s 32 MPG. The Outlander also includes three rows of seats, but its last row is just as useful as the Porsche 911’s rear seats.

The X1 also has standard all-wheel drive, making it a great choice for those who live in areas with winter weather.

The second-best compact SUV for 2022 is the Mercedes-Benz GLA. It has a stylish interior with high-quality materials, plenty of standard features and a peppy turbocharged engine. The GLA also offers optional all-wheel drive, but its fuel economy isn’t as good as that of the X1.

The third-best compact SUV for 2022 is the Audi Q3. It has a well-crafted interior with upscale materials a long list of standard features and a turbocharged engine that delivers good power and excellent fuel economy. All-wheel drive is optional on the Q3, but it’s not available with the base
