This is Toyota’s full-size truck and its new third generation is a welcome successor to the long-running second generation from 2007 all the way through 2021. Major improvements to the new 2022 Tundra include an overhauled frame, new rear suspension, new powertrain and a more modern interior design. Under the hood are your choice of two turbocharged V6 engines. The base turbo V6 makes about the same amount of power as the old Tundra’s V8 (389 hp) but produces more torque helps towing and has better EPA-estimated fuel economy.

Toyota went to great lengths to improve every aspect of the latest Tundra pickup. How does the Tundra drive? While the loss of the roaring 5.7-liter V8 may cause some concern among Tundra loyalists the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is more than a suitable replacement. Considerable torque is available even at low revs and the 10-speed automatic transmission Fast and smooth transitions. In our testing a 4WD Tundra sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds which is pretty quick. This power blends easily into traffic and travels unimpeded on open highways.
Braking is equally firm. Our emergency braking test at 60 mph saw the Tundra come to a stop at 131 feet—a little better than average—and that’s the tougher tires our test truck had from the TRD off-road kit. Lightweight and accurate steering makes it easy to guide The truck drives on tight back roads and occasionally feels like a smaller Tacoma.
The TRD Off-Road package on our test truck included a locking rear differential and additional off-road driving modes but it didn’t seem to significantly improve the truck’s off-road capabilities. It’s a big truck and its long wheelbase means the underbody can easily hang on it Seemingly simple obstacle. If you’re going to be climbing any trails in the Tundra you’ll probably want to get the TRD Pro.
How comfortable is the tundra? Compared to the previous generation this Tundra is a significant improvement. Seat comfort and interior noise levels have been vastly improved and the Tundra is a comfortable truck that offers long-distance travel for front and rear passengers. Although the sound of the V6 engine is not as good as the previously available V8 V6 at full throttle sounds suitable for a full-size truck.
The Ram 1500 still rules the class with sheer ride quality but the Tundra offers a fairly stable and judder-free ride on most surfaces. Tundra’s direct climate control is largely set it and forget it but we appreciate the big buttons and dials even if some of them Hard to read labels in bright sunlight.

How is the interior? While the optional 14-inch touchscreen is sure to grab your attention, the Tundra’s straightforward interior layout and overall ease of use make a more lasting impression. Instruments and graphics are clear at a glance commanding the driving position to make driving A full-size tundra is less intimidating. Like all full-size trucks the Tundra offers plenty of room for all passengers, especially in CrewMax configuration.
When equipped with the optional panoramic sunroof and unique full-width power rear window the Tundra feels very airy and spacious. Forward visibility is generally good even though the Tundra has a sizable hood. But the truck’s thick windshield pillars can easily block your view in both lanes the way. We recommend using the Tundra’s surround-view camera system as it makes the truck easier to maneuver in tight places.
How is technology?
The Tundra’s optional 14-inch touchscreen is a standout feature. It has crisp graphics and its various on-screen menus are easy to use. In fact, we bet some smartphone users might even prefer the native setup over Apple CarPlay or Android Auto standard) for most functions. Our test truck was equipped with an upgraded JBL audio system but we found the sound quality of the standard system to be adequate.
Most of Tundra’s advanced driver aids are standard and generally work well. We did not encounter any false positives in our tests. The only disappointment is the lane-keeping system which isn’t particularly useful at keeping this big truck centered between lane markings.
Towing and Storage
How about towing and storage? The latest Tundra has powerful features. Our test truck equipped with the standard V6 engine and 4WD CrewMax configuration was rated to tow 11,120 pounds when properly equipped. Tundra’s max towing and towing capacity aren’t class-leading but they are. That’s certainly good enough for what most owners will do with their trucks. A reinforced compound bed is standard.
The extra space in the CrewMax four-door allows for plenty of storage options inside the rear for items you don’t want to put on the bed. The storage space under the rear seats is generous as is the storage space for small items for the front passenger. But the interior pantry in the Tundra is not as organized as the Tundra. Among its domestic counterparts we can see that Tundra’s various bins quickly get a little messy.
How’s the fuel economy? Fuel economy isn’t usually the most important thing for most full-size truck buyers but those interested in the Tundra may want to lower their expectations. The EPA estimates the 4WD Tundra’s combined fuel consumption of 19 mpg which is on par with the competition. However, our test truck Running at a disappointing 15.2 mpg on our real-world evaluation route. The Tundra managed just 16.9 mpg on the weekend’s open-road driving-heavy fishing trip. That’s worse than what we’ve observed from testing other full-size trucks.
Is Tundra worth the money? The interior is built to a very high standard. The gaps are tight and all the various trim elements are arranged precisely. Although our limited interior test Tundra lacked luxury elements like wood and chrome that you’ll find in other mid-size full-size trucks Toyota didn’t feel it At least a little down-market or pragmatism.
The three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and the five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty are about average. But the Tundra’s two-year/25,000-mile free maintenance is slightly higher.
When it comes to towing traction or ride comfort the Tundra can’t claim to be top-notch but there’s nothing wrong with having capability and comfort as its main strengths. This truck is easy to drive and live with with a 14″ touchscreen and full-width powered rear. The windows help give it a unique driving experience.

For an attractive collection of standard features as well as the option to add additional features we recommend taking a closer look at the Limited trim. It features a 14-inch touchscreen and hydraulic cab mounts for a smoother ride that differentiates the Limited model from the base model. This is also the first trim. Toyota Tundra models
The 2022 Toyota Tundra is a four-door pickup truck available in Extended Cab (Double Cab) and CrewMax (CrewMax) configurations each with a short-bed and a long-bed option. There are seven trim levels to choose from: SR SR5 Limited Platinum 1794 TRD Pro and Capstone.
Standard on the first five trims is a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that makes 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel drive, the latter with low-range gearing.
Available on Limited Platinum and 1794 trims the TRD Pro and Capstone come standard with the same engine but paired with a battery-electric hybrid system. The powertrain has a combined output of 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.
