Orland. Godilla. Lost City. All movie titles receive immeasurable help by adding the letter Z, but the role’s importance isn’t limited to the realm of movies. Thankfully Nissan’s latest interpretation of its two-seater sports car kept the letter, butt it did lose The numerical name that usually accompanies it. There’s no 400Z nomenclature here — the seventh-generation coupe is simply called the 2023 Nissan Z.

The new Z is the latest and perhaps the last gasoline-powered version of the company’s famous two-seater sports car. It follows the previous generation 370Z after a three-year hiatus. This new Z isn’t entirely new — it shares its basic body structure with its predecessor — but Nissan revised almost everything. There’s a more powerful engine with improved handling and braking feel and an updated cabin and new technology features. 2023 Z starts as low as $40,000 and competes primarily with BMW 2-Series Chevrolet Camaro Ford Mustang and Toyota GR Supra.

What’s under the Z’s hood now?

The Nissan Z is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque—a healthy increase from the 370Z’s maximum 350 horsepower and 276 pound-feet. We’ve tried this engine in the Infinite Q50 coupe and Q60 Red Sport 400 sedan, and it’s quite Frankly the powertrain is the best part of these vehicles.

Purists will rejoice at the return of the rear-wheel-drive layout and six-speed manual transmission. Manually equipped Performance models feature rev-matching, so you’ll always hit the right mark on downshifts. It also comes with launch control if you opt for higher performance prune. All Zs with the available nine-speed automatic transmission feature launch control.

On the base Sport trim you get 18-inch wheels wrapped in Yokohama Advan Sport tires. Opt for the Performance grade and Nissan replaces them with lightweight forged 19-inch wheels from rays. These are Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires.

We head to Las Vegas to drive the new Nissan Z for the first time. We started on a shortened drag strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to safely assess its acceleration. It feels strong and pulls hard in low gear. We ran a few acceleration runs in the Performance model of A nine-speed automatic transmission as well as a base Sport model with a six-speed manual. Performance models benefit from Launch Control which automatically adjusts the car’s throttle and traction settings for optimal acceleration for maximum performance. The sports model with A manual transmission is hard to come off the line as quickly as it doesn’t have a mechanical limited-slip rear differential that launches control or optimizes traction.

At the time of our review Nissan had not released any estimates for the Z acceleration. The Infinite Red Sports we’ve tested before is capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in about 5 seconds so arguably the lighter Z will be quicker. Nissan says The manual-equipped Z weighs about 3,500 pounds about 100 pounds heavier than the six-cylinder-equipped Toyota GR Supra.

Next up is a revised 1.8-mile road course to explore the Z’s handling limits. Performance models with manual transmissions are certainly the choice for drivers looking for maximum engagement. The manual’s gear ratios are well spaced to keep the engine running high the Z itself provides a good balance for track driving. Downshifting is aided by automatic rev-matching which turns the throttle between gears for the smoothest transition. More traditional drivers prefer to step on the gas themselves, Andre’re happy to report that automatic rev-matching disables the new Z Allows you to perform classic heel-toe downshifts as well as any other shifting car. This was difficult on the older 370Z.

At track speeds the Z instills confidence and allows the driver to gradually increase aggression. A little pep on the throttle can easily cause some rear wheel slip and when those tires release their grip and the rear end starts to drift it’s gentle and easy control. The upgraded Performance fine-tuned brakes show no performance loss for a few laps and are just as easy to control.

Despite retaining some old elements the new Z has been completely updated on the inside. The new dashboard features a large infotainment touchscreen running more modern software. There’s also a slick new digital instrument panel that does a good job of conveying key information quickly. Below the center display are three 370Z-like climate control dials. It’s an old-fashioned design, butt they’re refreshingly easy to use compared to some newer and more sophisticated on-screen climate controls. Other leftovers include most other switches and buttons and the Interior door handle.

The cabin is on the comfort side for medium-sized adults meaning taller and larger drivers may be constrained by space. The quality of materials has improved in some places especially on the dash, but the hard plastic used on the center console is rather disappointing because it’s a surface Contact regularly. It might be less of a disappointment considering the $40,000 starting price, butt we’d expect the more expensive Performance trim to be even better.

2023 Nissan Z storage

There is some contingency in cargo capacity which is understandable since it looks identical to the previous-gen Z. The announced capacity is a paltry 6.9 cubic feet, but space isn’t as limited as that number would suggest. The rear hatch opens wide but if you opt for the rear hatch the space is shallow Available cargo cover. Without the lid larger objects should fit under the glass that closes the hatch, but they will obstruct your rearview. The cargo floor is also interrupted by two large plastic suspension assembly covers further limiting what you might want to haul.

In the cabin you have some small upholder door pockets and a center armrest bin. There’s also a rubber tray to hold your phone and a pair of shallow cases behind the seats. That’s fine for a two-seater sports car, but many other cars offer better storage and cargo space.
