The Kona is a sporty subcompact SUV with quick acceleration and fun handling. In testing of the Kona with the turbocharged engine we measured a 0-60 mph time of just 7.2 seconds which is very fast for a car of this type. Over the years, Hyundai has A dual-clutch automatic transmission paired with a turbocharged engine. It’s just one of the better transmissions in its class. But there is occasional hesitation when leaving a stop.

When cornering, the Kona is surprisingly composure and grippe. The steering doesn’t give you much sense of the road, but overall it’s a pleasant little SUV. The brakes brought the Kona to a smooth stop in town and provided average emergency braking power.

The Kona rides harder than the competition, which makes this little Hyundai feel a little busy on rough roads. But overall, getting the car’s tight handling is a worthwhile tradeoff. Road noise is a little distracting, but that’s not uncommon for the class. Overall, Kona is beautiful, quiet.

The Kona’s front seats are supportive and adequately adjustable, but they lack side bolsters for extra comfort. Our N-Line test car came with a grippe cloth interior that looked sharp and provided decent breathability over long distances.

The back seat is flat and wide, but not too wide upright. Climate controls are a simple two-knob system that doesn’t require a touchscreen to operate. The seat heaters in our test vehicle worked quickly on cold mornings.

In this class of fuel-guzzling mini-SUVs, the Kona’s EPA rating is decent but average among its competitors. Still, the Kona impressed us by beating most of its competitors in our actual testing. Hyundai Kona Technology

The Kona is a feature-packed vehicle with a lot of standard and available technology, and everything works well. We also like the Harman Kardon stereo system in N-Line trim, which provides ample bass response and good sound quality across a wide range of music genres.

The navigation system does the job, features an easy-to-read display and helpful turn-by-turn tips. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are standard, although internal USB ports are few and far between. Wireless charging is available.

Kona’s driver assistance systems are always accurate and don’t trigger false alarms when we’re using the vehicle. We were particularly impressed by the optional adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous driving mode (which Hyundai calls Highway Driving Assist). Best to keep Kona Centered on its driveway, it costs twice as much as many rival SUV systems.

In direct comparison to the Squad Leader, the Kona really only falters in terms of practicality. The trunk is easy to use thanks to the lower lift height and wider cargo floor. But compared to similar SUVs like the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Volkswagen Taos the Kona falls short in terms of maximum cargo space.

You’ll find plenty of water-bottle-sized pockets in all four doors, glove box, glove a small phone tray up front and a small center console and glove box. So while storage for small items is decent, other small SUVs do better. Car seat anchors are clearly marked and close to the surface, but They are sandwiched between sturdy cushions.

Standing on the Kona’s dashboard is a touchscreen infotainment system flanked by simple shortcut buttons that let you easily switch between frequently used menus. We found the system to be intuitive to operate yet leisurely in responding to input. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard, but Buyers who want a larger display can upgrade to 10.3 inches.

Driving directions can be projected onto an optional head-up display that flips up from the dashboard, which also shows the vehicle’s speed and other information. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard wireless Connections that provide such functionality are available as an option.

Kona offers a great set of features at an affordable price. Models with turbocharged engines can be a bit more expensive, butt you can still definitely get your money’s worth. Everything feels sold, butt only a few interior surfaces are treated with soft or padded materials.

This alternating surface textures and a good fit and finish go a long way to making the Kona look less cheap, but without hiding the never-ending plastic. The Mazda CX-30 sets the standard with its upscale interior.

Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is the best in the industry, and the 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty is better than any other vehicle in its class. The added value comes in the form of three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance.
